Our History |
|
In The Beginning...
As early as 1836, a small group of devoted
Christians began meeting
along the St. Joe River to study the Bible and pray for their
friends
who did not know Christ. Stepping out in faith, this small band
of
believers took action to become the first organized church in
Dekalb
county on February 17, 1837. It was called the Church of the
Disciples.
Elder Benjamin Alton was the first minister of the Gospel to
locate in
Dekalb county, and it was Benjamin Alton who preached
the first sermon in the county.
From its humble beginings over 165 years ago, God has blessed
this
congregation's efforts to reach people with the story of Jesus
Christ.
Each facility that was built or remodeled serves as a tangible
reminder of God's faithfulness in providing what we need to reach
those who do not know Him.
Todays Relevance
Just as that small group of Christians met
together to pray for Friends,
we also strive to lead people in a growing relationship with
Jesus Christ.
Even though we may sing different songs, dress a little more
casually, and
hold services throughout the week, our focus is the same as it
was for those
who first met in 1837. The methods by which we share the story
may change,
but the message is everlasting. And our message is simply this:
Salvation
comes from God through Jesus Christ for all who will accept it.
Our Future
From our beginnings in the log cabin,
Coburn Corners Church continues
to grow and receive God's blessing. We invite you to come and be
a part of this
exciting time at Coburn Corners Church of Christ.
